The Dance Scene Photography Exhibition returns for its fifth series of dance photography. December’s Arts Alive will be the exhibition’s premiere at the 208 C Street Studios in Old Town Eureka. There will be a selection of 100 new stunning dance photographs for the Arts Alive opening reception on Saturday, December 4, 2021 from 6 – 9 p.m. This photography art show pairs ballet dancers with environments outside of their normal studio space. Finding unique Humboldt County locations is part of the appeal and also challenge of the project. Carrie Badeaux, the director of the project, works closely with the dancers to create a compelling body of work. Removing dancers from the dance studio brings many captivating composition relationships. Five local dancers are featured: Brooke Grammer, Zaila Barba-Oliveri, Cain Towers, Carrie Badeaux, and Elizabeth Cable.Elizabeth Cable comments about viewing Humboldt County as an art conception with, “It was great to experience Eureka from an artistic perspective. Although I’ve walked by many of the murals, I had never thought of them as a backdrop for dance expression. Being involved in that process was a great honor.” The ongoing collaboration brought about venturing to unique locations including the Del Norte Street pier, an old shuttered bar, Benbow Inn’s balconies, Eureka’s new Old Town murals, Humboldt Bay shores, and the Hikshari’ trail’s train tracks and bridge, among many more. Badeaux comments, “I enjoy the connection between the two art forms of dance and photography. A dance still is a much different visual than its usual movement. Pairing that stillness with our beautiful landscapes and unique vistas has been a great project. It has to personify the spirit of dance.” Since some of the photographers are also the photo subjects, they seem to be extra excited to see the show. Cain Towers said, “Such a pleasure it was to express myself through the form of ballet while melding in with the natural wonder of our beautiful Humboldt County. It was a delight to participate in this project with Carrie and my fellow company members"The opening will debut framed photographs as well as a continuous projected showing of the full collection of 100 photos. The first installment of the Dance Scene Photography Exhibition was presented in March of 2013.
