A tattoo your mom would approve of?Fine Line Design Tattoo & Piercing is inking for good by donating the proceeds of select tattoos to the North Coast Rape Crisis Team during April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.Artist Shaugn McEvoy was in the process of inking an “iron heart” on Rhonda Martinho when the Triplicate showed up to Fine Line. They saved my life,” said Martinho.The NCRCT is a nonprofit dedicated to the many needs of survivors — offering a 24/7 hotline, emergency response care, advocacy during the court process, counseling for survivors and their family members, among other services. They also speak at local schools and events to spread awareness, and teach self-defense classes for women.Kira Morse of the NCRCT said sexual assault and abuse can go unnoticed in rural areas like Del Norte, and survivors may not know that there are resources available to them here.“I’ve personally lived here my whole life, and I didn’t know NCRCT existed until I applied…It’s so hush-hush, it’s so taboo, nobody talks about it, so there’s none of that open communication, said Morse. “We don’t have things like a Planned Parenthood or a walk-in clinic, so people don’t have easy access. The only time people hear about us is when an assault happens.”Morse said most fundraisers were put on hold last year due to COVID, but she has noticed a surge of support from the community this year.“With this fundraiser, and us sharing it on social media, we’re seeing people share this post and putting ‘I’m a survivor’... It’s really encouraging to see,” said Morse.For Martinho and her kids, the NCRCT was integral during every stage of their recovery.“I would shout from the rooftops how important this team is, I believe in them totally. Like I said, I wouldn’t have made it through without them,” said Martinho.The fundraiser will continue until the end of the month with prices of the select tattoos ranging from $60-80 depending on the piece, excluding gratuity.
