The Del Norte High School boy’s golf team finished 5th overall in the final tournament of the shortened season.Eight teams totaling 35 golfers participated in the tournament held at Del Norte County golf course Monday: Eureka, Arcata, St. Bernard, Fortuna, McKinleyville, Hoopa, South Fork and Del Norte.Del Norte’s Blake Larson was the team’s low scorer with a 96 for the round. With the help of teammates Damon Molina, Anthony DeVos, and Nathan DeNichols, the Warriors secured a team total of 444 that narrowly edged out McKinleyville, a team that was operating with an additional golfer.Eureka finished first overall with a team total of 351. Talon Vigil from Eureka and Riley Mosher from Arcata tied for the tournament’s individual lows with matching 84s.Blake Lopez, Del Norte High School golf coach, said COVID and a few rainouts hindered the season, but the team showed signs of improvement during the four-week season.“I’m just really happy that the kids have been able to get out and play. It’s been a really long time since they’ve been able to do things,” said Lopez.Lopez said turnout was low this year due to a number of sports all taking place at once, including football and soccer, which are normally played in the fall. However, he said was optimistic because the team is young, and all of the golfers will have a chance to come back better next season. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('ad-1515727'); });
