Last Chance Grade south of Crescent City was reopen for one-way traffic as of Wednesday morning, according to Caltrans.The stretch of U.S. Highway 101 was closed off and on after winter weather caused significant slide activity to cover the road completely Saturday afternoon. One-way traffic reopened briefly Sunday evening, before additional slide activity closed the road again.According to Caltrans, the only recommended alternate route between Crescent City and Eureka takes drivers on U.S. Highway 199 to Grants Pass, then south on Interstate 5 to Redding and east on State Route 299 to Eureka.#placement_573654_0_i{width:100%;max-width:550px;margin:0 auto;}var rnd = window.rnd || Math.floor(Math.random()*10e6);var pid573654 = window.pid573654 || rnd;var plc573654 = window.plc573654 || 0;var abkw = window.abkw || '';var absrc = 'https://ads.empowerlocal.co/adserve/;ID=181918;size=0x0;setID=573654;type=js;sw='+screen.width+';sh='+screen.height+';spr='+window.devicePixelRatio+';kw='+abkw+';pid='+pid573654+';place='+(plc573654++)+';rnd='+rnd+';click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER';var _absrc = absrc.split("type=js"); absrc = _absrc[0] + 'type=js;referrer=' + encodeURIComponent(document.location.href) + _absrc[1];document.write('');Crews worked to remove debris and other rocks from the roadway before reopening the road again to one-way traffic Monday evening and advising drivers about possible 30-minute delays.Throughout the week, drivers felt the impact of the closures. The Del Norte Unified School District warned parents about the possibility of closures impacting bus routes to Crescent City Schools.As of Tuesday evening, bus service had returned to normal, according to the district.“Students riding the bus to in-town schools will be picked up as close as possible to their normal time but will most likely be dropped off 30 to 60 minutes late when returning home,” district officials wrote in a Facebook post. “If your child rides a bus from Klamath to Crescent City for school, we strongly encourage you to make alternative care plans, in the event that a slide occurs while your child is attending school in Crescent City and is unable to return home.”Caltrans officials said the closures have prompted many questions about the department’s long-running work to correct the road’s problems.“In recent years, project stakeholders including Caltrans, local tribes, environmental groups, lawmakers, and more have buckled down to move this project in the right direction very quickly given its requirements, complications, and magnitude,” Caltrans officials wrote on the agency’s Facebook page Tuesday.More information about the department’s planning for the road is available online at lastchancegrade.com/, and the latest road conditions for all California highways are available online at quickmap.dot.ca.gov/. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('ad-1515727'); });
