Applicants are still being sought for a committee to provide oversight of Measure S spending in Crescent City.Voters overwhelmingly approved Measure S, which raised the sales tax in the city by 1 cent, with the money designated to spent on the police department, fire department, roads and the city pool. The tax went into effect Jan. 1, with the city receiving its first dose of funding this summer.Part of the measure was an oversight committee that will report annually to the community about how the tax revenue was spent. The city asked for applicants recently, but the council voted to extend the deadline for applicants to Feb. 5, with a decision on committee members to be made Feb. 16. Five members of the community will be chosen as voting members.City Manager Eric Weir said he expects the committee to meet early each year. The bylaws moved forward by the council do not set a specific number of meetings, but Weir said they could meet as often as needed. The key meetings, the city manager said, would likely be in January each year.“That’s also right around the time we’ll have our completed audits from the last year,” Weir said. “That’s where this committee can then look at the past year’s expenditures that have been audited and say, yes this follows what the council recommended and that would be just about the right time in assisting us on the next year’s budget.”Weir said the city had three or four applicants as of Thursday with a closing date set as Jan. 22. He said since Mayor Jason Greenough cannot attend the next meeting, and the mayor is required to recommend the members, it would be appropriate to extend the application date.“I’d like to get more people on that and maybe more diverse representation,” Mayor Pro Tem Alex Campbell said.Councilman Blake Inscore urged the council to seek out applicants if they felt someone would be a good fit.“I think we need to give as good an opportunity as possible to as many people in the community as we can to be a part of this,” he said. “Our community deserves a high-functioning Measure S Committee. This is probably more important than most of the committees the council sits on because the review and recommendations this committee puts out is what two-thirds of our community voted to have.
