John Patrick Fay was born on December 10, 1947 and passed away November 19, 2020 in Crescent City after a three year battle with cancer. He was born to parents John C. Fay and Ruth H Fay in Lima, Ohio.John was raised and attended grammar school in Roundhead, Ohio. He graduated from Elida High School in Lima, Ohio. Upon Graduation, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He made three tours to Vietnam on three separate aircraft carriers: USS Enterprise, USS Bonhomme Richard, and USS John Hancock. He was stationed at Lemoore Naval Air Station west of Fresno, CA. While stationed there, John had a part-time job in Fresno where he met future wife Dorothy Voss. They were married June 1969 and resided in the Fresno area. John attended Fresno City College majoring in Law Enforcement. He was hired by Lindsay Police Department October 1970 working there until November 1974.That November, the family moved to Del Norte County where John began his career as a deputy with the Sheriff’s department. He worked for 27 years holding the ranks of jailor, road deputy, detective, canine deputy, sergeant, Undersheriff and Commander, retiring as Sergeant of the Task Force in 2001.John and Dorothy started Crescent Uniforms and Supplies in 1986, owing it for 25 years. After retiring from the Sheriff’s department, John started JPF Investigations operating until 2017. John had many hobbies. He became a pilot owning his own airplane for several years. John owned and operated a small commercial fishing vessel, FV Idle Rich. Upon retirement from investigations, John and Dorothy R.V.’d across the US and Canada and went on yearly camping trips to Howard’s Prairie with friends.In recent years, John belonged to the Del Norte Men’s League at the golf course and thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie with his golfing buddies. John was a past president of the Del Norte Sunrise Rotary; a past Exalted Ruler of the Crescent City Elks Lodge; a member of the Crescent City Car Club (’57 Chevy) and a member of the International Footprinter’s Association.John is survived by his wife of 51 years Dorothy Fay; daughters Heather Stone (Troy) of Bend, OR; Holly Fay of Central Point, OR and Haley Clark (Jeremy) of Eureka, CA. Grandchildren Dylan Stone, Kylie Stone, Jeremy M. Clark and Addison Clark, great grandson Milo Welch and a great grandson expected soon. Brother Michael Fay (Linda) of Cairo, OH; sisters Rita Nees of Lima, OH and Jean Bradford (Danny) of Cairo, OH. He is also survived by Dorothy’s siblings and many nieces and nephews.John’s humor and “lively spirit” will be greatly missed by numerous family members, friends and his loyal dog Allie.
