Frank Gray Gist, Jr., was born March 15, 1954 in Willits, CA. He passed away at home in Crescent City on November 20, 2020.He is preceded in death by his father Frank Gray Gist, Sr. and mother Gladys Spott Gist; great uncle Archie & Minnie Spott Macomber who raised him. His brothers Leroy, Gist, John Anthony Gist and Daniel James Craig.Frank is survived by his sister Alice Oscar, Mary Jackson, Christine Johnson and Karen Moulton. Myna Kay Hill and Beth Rorie. His first wife Virginia Monares and mother of his wonderful children Naomi & Frank Gist III, Lymon & Sheldon Melton, Veronica Amaya. His former first wife Deyetta Pickens and daughter Johanna Pickens.He served out country in the Army in Company B 3rd Halton 325th infantry. Frank was awarded the following badges… Expert Infantryman, Parachutist, M-16 Sharpshooter, 45 Cal Pistol Marksmanship and the Good Conduct medal. He served 6 years at the infantry man and two years as a dental specialist.Frank also worked as a dentist assistance at Sacramento Urban Indian Health Services and as a social worker for Native American families for Sacramento County.He was an accomplished Native American artist. Frank craved elk horn purses, acorn spoons and was a jewelry maker. He was featured in the California Indian News as well as the Smithsonian Museum of Art Magazines.His artwork is displayed at the Phoebe Hearst Museum, UC Berkley, Sutter Fort Museum in Sacramento and Trees of Mystery.Frank was chosen as the Fire Tender for Native American Church. He was part of the Gourd Member Society as a veteran at Powwows. He provided and taught Yurok Brush dance demonstrations all over California. Frank also assisted in the Sun Dance Ceremonies in South Dakota.He shared his knowledge of Yurok Culture and Native American ceremonies to anyone wanting to learn. He was a great hunter and fisherman. He loved to do anything he could with his hands. He was loved by many and will be sorely missed. We are saddened by his passing, but we know he will be dancing, singing, and watching over us.There will be a boat ride from the Requa Ramp on Friday, November 27th at 9:00 am.
