Thelma Owings passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2020 just a month shy from her 90th birthday. She was born in Texas to John and Lola Reed. Thelma Reed and her husband Joel Owings married on May 8, 1948. The family moved to Del Norte County in 1974. They raised three children together and ran the fishing vessel (F/V) Carmela Marie. Thelma operated the Sea Shanty, a local restaurant and seafood market in the Crescent City Harbor. Her and her husband owned the business and the F/V for 20+ years.She was a devoted fisherman’s wife, mother, and grandmother. She lived a simple life full of generosity and creativity. She spent most of her days sewing or crocheting. She donated several blankets and hats to local nursing homes, the Harrington House and Sutter Coast Hospital Maternity unit. She was a devoted Southern Baptist and spent many Sundays at the former Oceanview Baptist Church. She also attended First Baptist Church, until she was no longer physically able to attend. Thelma enjoyed worship and could play the organ and the piano. She also enjoyed singing on, one of her favorite hymns was “In the Garden” by C. Austin Miles. Her passions were gardening and art. She was very proud of her rose garden.Thelma leaves behind her two living children Teresa Johnson and Edwin Owings (Angelina). She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her brothers Weldon Reed, Ray Reed (LaWanda), and sister Faye Staples (Jack). Thelma’s grandchildren are Ronnie Johnson, Joann Johnson, Cara Owings and Emily Reed (Thomas). Her great-grandchildren are Breaunna Johnson, Leslie Joe Johnson, Annalena Reed, Tee-me’ Reed and Marlee Reed.Thelma is preceded in death by her husband Joel of 40 years, her daughter Lola Owings, her parents John and Lola Reed and her sister Oleta Holmes.Private viewing services were held. Private family services will be held at a later date.Thelma was a beautiful Texas rose that will be deeply missed by all those that knew her.
