This is our daily COVID-19 report for Curry and Del Norte counties; our last report was published at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17. The Short ReportThe first COVID-related death in the two-county region was reported yesterday in Del Norte County. Details below.Curry CountyYesterday, Curry County Public Health reported receiving notification of one new case of COVID-19. Notification of this new case came from Curry General Hospital at 12:30 p.m. This case was verified and confirmed by the Health Officer after receiving the lab results. Contact has been made with the individual who is a resident of another county.Public Health officials learned that this individual arrived in Curry County yesterday with symptoms and that he decided to go to Curry General Hospital for testing. After speaking by phone with the individual about the absolute need for immediate isolation, the individual advised he was going to travel back to his county of residence and isolate. Public Health advised the individual that he should not have any contact with others if he insisted to travel back or otherwise.The case has been referred to the individual’s county of residence. As of yesterday, Health Officer Sherrié R. Ward reoirted the total verified number of positive cases in Curry County is still currently 19, with 14 recovered cases, 5 active cases, zero hospitalizations and zero deaths. She said the Aug. 17 case will not be reflected in the daily totals.Curry County Public Health is investigating all cases to identify any possible contacts and exposures and to isolate and monitor all individuals relevant to the case, she said, and that Public Health will reach out to anyone suspected of exposure to COVID-19."Please remember, it is important that we all follow the OHA and CDC guidelines and Governor’s directives about social distancing, wearing facial coverings in public buildings and protecting yourselves by staying home to slow the spread and save lives," she said. "Curry County Public Health will only post confirmed positive cases once the official lab results are received, verified and confirmed by the Health Officer. Public Health will continue to keep the public informed with all the information we can in order to keep our citizens safe."Curry County updates its data on Facebook from time to time and also reports basic information HERE.Del Norte CountyDel Norte County Public Health reported yesterday that a community member had died after being hospitalized for COVID-19 symptoms and was confirmed positive. "We are deeply saddened to report that a Del Norte County community member has died after being hospitalized for COVID-19 symptoms and was confirmed positive. Our hearts go out to this person’s loved ones and all those who are mourning," the health department said in a statement. "The person who passed away was over 65 years of age and experienced multiple underlying health conditions. Case investigation for this person’s COVID-19 illness suggests that this was a community-acquired infection. No specific place or event was identified as the source of the infection."This case represents a milestone for our community and is a tragic reminder that we must all do our part to protect each other, especially our most vulnerable. If employees live outside Del Norte County, the health department passes that information on to the county of residence.CDCR is now reporting 28 positive staff among PBSP staff (an increase of two over recent numbers) with 18 of those returned to work.So far, no inmates at the prison have tested positive.
