This is our daily COVID-19 report for Curry and Del Norte counties; our last report was published at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11.The Short ReportYesterday, both Del Norte and Curry counties reported new confirmed COVID-19 cases.#placement_573654_0_i{width:100%;max-width:550px;margin:0 auto;}var rnd = window.rnd || Math.floor(Math.random()*10e6);var pid573654 = window.pid573654 || rnd;var plc573654 = window.plc573654 || 0;var abkw = window.abkw || '';var absrc = 'https://ads.empowerlocal.co/adserve/;ID=181918;size=0x0;setID=573654;type=js;sw='+screen.width+';sh='+screen.height+';spr='+window.devicePixelRatio+';kw='+abkw+';pid='+pid573654+';place='+(plc573654++)+';rnd='+rnd+';click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER';var _absrc = absrc.split("type=js"); absrc = _absrc[0] + 'type=js;referrer=' + encodeURIComponent(document.location.href) + _absrc[1];document.write('');Curry County reported receiving notification of one new case from Curry General Hospital; however the individual is a non-resident and the case will not be counted by Curry County. Details below.Del Norte reported four positive cases, bringing the total confirmed cases to 104 with one person still hospitalized. Details below.Pelican Bay's numbers did not change: The California Dept. of Corrections and Rehabilitation is still reporting zero inmate cases, 26 staff cases (24 from mandatory testing in July and two from May) with all but 18 staff returned to work. Details below.Curry CountyYesterday evening, Aug. 11, Curry County Public Health reported receiving notification from Curry General Hospital of a confirmed case of COVID-19. This recent case is a non-resident and was identified to be a close, prolonged, workplace contact of a positive case that was reported on Aug. 6. This additional case and his wife are self-isolating and monitoring symptoms at their home outside of Curry County.Public Health Administrator Sherrié R. Ward said this case has been reported back to the individual's state of residency and will not be reflected in Curry County’s overall active count."Please remember, it is important that we all follow the OHA and CDC guidelines and Governor’s directives about social distancing, wearing facial coverings in public buildings and protecting yourselves by staying home to slow the spread and save lives," Ward said.According to Curry County Public Health, the county has had 17 reported positive cases with 14 recovered and three active. There have been no hospitalizations or deaths. It has been difficult for The Pilot to follow or interpret Curry County's data because there has been no clarification of how the county is tabulating testing. For instance, a baby who tested positive was counted as positive and recovered even though subsequent tests showed the baby was not positive. And Curry County residents who work at Pelican Bay State Prison and tested positive there were removed from Del Norte's count when reported to Curry County, but they don't appear to be added to Curry's numbers — although Ward is reporting that she is removing out-of-state residents who test positive in Curry from the county's numbers when they are reported back to their home state.Still, the numbers are relatively small.Another way to look at COVID-19 in Curry County is offered by this dashboard displaying Oregon Health Authority data (although it may lag behind county reports). The dashboard shows percentages, not raw numbers. This morning, for instance, Curry's case count was showing as 62.5 per 100,000 population (just a way of showing data, since the county has under 23,000 people, so the actual number would be about less than a fourth of that). Comparatively, Josephine County has 132.6 cases per 100,000 people, Coos County 143.8 and the state leader (a dubious distinction in this case), Morrow County with 2,933.1 cases per 100,000 population. The same dashboard shows that 73% of Curry's cases have recovered and that only 1% of tests have been positive (compared to 2% in Coos and a whopping 22% in Morrow County.Curry County updates its data on Facebook from time to time and also reports basic information HERE.Del Norte CountyThere were four (4) positive cases reported to Public Health yesterday. The first case was a household contact to a known case. The second case was reported late to Public Health, after the isolation period would have been complete. The third case was a contact to a positive case in another jurisdiction. The fourth case is still under investigation. Contact tracing is either completed or underway for all four cases.Currently, one active case is hospitalized for COVID-19 symptoms and another active case is hospitalized for issues unrelated to COVID-19.As it continues to investigate the sources of recent positive cases, the department strongly urges the community to minimize gatherings, rethink any travel plans outside of the area, continue to social distance, and wear face coverings when social distancing is not possible. Here is the latest data from Del Norte as of yesterday afternoon's report:New confirmed COVID-19 cases: 4Current Hospitalizations: 1Total tests: 6263Total confirmed cases: 104Total active cases: 13Total inactive cases: 91Total hospitalizations: 3Total deaths: 0TransmissionContact to a Known Case: 55 cases (53%)Travel-Acquired: 8 cases (8%)Community Transmission: 38 cases (37%)Under Investigation: 3 cases (2%)GenderMales: 56 cases (54%)Females: 48 cases (46%)Age Range0-17 years: 22 cases (21%)18-49 years: 56 cases (54%)50-64 years: 19 cases (18%)65+ years: 7 cases (7%)Mean Age: 36Other DataSymptomatic Cases: 56 cases (54%)Asymptomatic Cases: 47 cases (46%) Passive Case Finding: 55 cases (53%)Active Case Finding: 49 cases (47%)For more information about these numbers visit the county’s COVID-19 website at http://www.covid19.dnco.orgPelican Bay State PrisonPelican Bay State Prison is located in Del Norte County, but nearly a third of the facility's staff live in Curry County. The California Dept. of Corrections and Rehabilitation reports results of its testing to the Public Health department in Del Norte County. CDCR publishes COVID-19 related information regularly HERE. About Our ReportOur morning report, published at about 8 a.m., is part of our effort to provide the communities served by the Curry Coastal Pilot and Del Norte Triplicate with the latest relevant information about COVID-19.Although the communities we serve are in two different counties and two different states, residents frequently travel to neighboring communities for work, shopping and recreation. The virus is not contained by city, county or state boundaries. And we all need to know the rules at play in the jurisdictions we might visit.Unless there is urgent information that must be shared, we plan to make just one post daily with the best information we can gather — and compile what is relevant for our Friday print editions. If you have a suggestion for information you would like to see in this daily report, please send an email to: piloteditor@countrymedia.net.Unfortunately, all jurisdictions do not report information in the same format, so some information has not been provided for us to share and there is sometimes a lag in the time information is reported locally and when it is compiled into state or national statistics. What you need to know about COVID-19:Anyone can have mild to severe symptoms.Older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus.
