Today we moved our daily COVID-19 report for Curry and Del Norte counties to 8 a.m. each day.The Short ReportYesterday, both Del Norte and Curry counties reported new confirmed COVID-19 cases.In Del Norte County, the 100th case was reported.In Curry County one new case was reported. However Sherrié R. Ward, Public Health Administrator, said that the new case would not be reflected in Curry County's overall active count because it was an out-of-state resident. She also updated the county's totals, stating that an out-of-state vacationer who tested positive on Aug. 7 was incorrectly reported in Curry County's totals. There have been no hospitalizations or deaths.The latest report came just after 2 p.m. yesterday, Aug. 10, from Curry General Hospital."Public Health has reached out to the subject and at this point is still trying to contact the individual," said. "This person is the significant other of the out of state resident that was reported as a confirmed case and contacted on Aug. 7. This additional case will be reported back to their state of residency and will not be reflected in Curry County’s overall active count."It has been difficult for The Pilot to follow or interpret Curry County's data because there has been no clarification of how the county is tabulating testing. For instance, a baby who tested positive was counted as positive and recovered even though subsequent tests showed the baby was not positive. And Curry County residents who work at Pelican Bay State Prison and tested positive there were removed from Del Norte's count when reported to Curry County, but they don't appear to be added to Curry's numbers — although Ward is reporting that she is removing out-of-state residents who test positive in Curry from the county's numbers when they are reported back to their home state.Still, the numbers are relatively small.Another way to look at COVID-19 in Curry County is offered by this dashboard displaying Oregon Health Authority data (although it may lag behind county reports). The dashboard shows percentages, not raw numbers. This morning, for instance, Curry's case count was showing as 62.5 per 100,000 population (just a way of showing data, since the county has under 23,000 people, so the actual number would be about less than a fourth of that). Comparatively, Josephine County has 132.6 cases per 100,000 people, Coos County 143.8 and the state leader (a dubious distinction in this case), Morrow County with 2,933.1 cases per 100,000 population.The same dashboard shows that 73% of Curry's cases have recovered and that only 1% of tests have been positive (compared to 2% in Coos and a whopping 22% in Morrow County.Curry County updates its data on Facebook from time to time and also reports basic information HERE.Del Norte CountyHere is the latest data from Del Norte, as we reported in an article online yesterday:In a statement issued at 11:13 a.m. on Aug. 10, the Del Norte County Public Health Branch reported one new confirmed case, although the actual testing was some time ago.“While the lag-times are improving between commercial testing and reporting to Public Health, this new case was reported to Public Health after the isolation period would have been complete,” the report said. “This new case is still under investigation.”In other news from the county, one of the cases reported last week remains hospitalized and the rest of the other 10 active cases are self-isolating at home. There have been no reports of COVID-19 related deaths and few hospitalizations in the county.More results from inmate testing at Pelican Bay State Prison accounts for the increase in the number of tests reported yesterday — 6,155 compared to 4,889 on Friday, Aug. 7. According to the latest information available from the California Dept. of Corrections and Rehabilitation, no inmates have tested positive at PBSP. The latest information shows 26 total positives among staff (24 during recent mandatory testing and two previously) with 18 returned to work.Other data released by Del Norte Public Health yesterday:New confirmed COVID-19 cases: 1Current Hospitalizations: 1Total tests: 6155Total confirmed cases: 100Total active cases: 11Total inactive cases: 89Total hospitalizations: 3Total deaths: 0TransmissionContact to a Known Case: 53 cases (53%)Travel-Acquired: 8 cases (8%)Community Transmission: 37 cases (37%)Under Investigation: 2 cases (2%)GenderMales: 54 cases (54%)Females: 46 cases (46%)Age Range0-17 years: 22 cases (22%)18-49 years: 55 cases (55%)50-64 years: 16 cases (16%)65+ years: 7 cases (7%)Mean Age: 36Other DataSymptomatic Cases: 52 cases (53%)Asymptomatic Cases: 46 cases (47%)Passive Case Finding: 52 cases (53%)Active Case Finding: 47 cases (47%)For more information about these numbers visit the county’s COVID-19 website at http://www.covid19.dnco.orgAbout Our ReportOur late afternoon report, Monday through Friday, is part of our effort to provide the communities served by the Curry Coastal Pilot and Del Norte Triplicate with the latest relevant information about COVID-19.Although the communities we serve are in two different counties and two different states, residents frequently travel to neighboring communities for work and shopping. The virus is not contained by city, county or state boundaries. And we all need to know the rules at play in the jurisdictions we might visit.Unless there is urgent information that must be shared, we plan to make just one post daily with the best information we can gather — and compile what is relevant for our Friday print editions.If you have a suggestion for information you would like to see in this daily (Monday through Friday) report, please send an email to: piloteditor@countrymedia.net.Unfortunately, all jurisdictions do not report information in the same format, so some information has not been provided for us to share.What you need to know:Anyone can have mild to severe symptoms.Older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:Fever or chillCoughShortness of breath or difficulty breathingFatigueMuscle or body achesHeadacheNew loss of taste or smellSore throatCongestion or runny noseNausea or vomitingDiarrheaTestingDel Norte County provides a website HERE with information about testing, which includes some options for Oregon residents, as well as California residents. As of today, the information may seem a little dated, but it's a good start if you would like to be tested. Testing may also be available through Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City.CVS Pharmacy in Crescent City also provides testing, appointment required, for California residents only. Information HERE. In Curry County, check this website for testing information. Also the State of Oregon has a new website to assist you in finding testing (does not include California locations). googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('ad-1515727'); });
