On Monday, June 29, 2020, we lost a truly independent and inspirational 98-year-old woman born in the Roaring Twenties. Gloria Nelson Brasuel was born on Jan. 20, 1922 in Portage, Pennsylvania, to Hester Diehl and Paul Nelson.Gloria grew up in Portage, Pennsylvania, Seattle, Washington, and Roseville and , Sacramento, California. After graduation from high school, Gloria competed for the Olympic diving team, won a scholarship to California School of Arts and Crafts, and attended University of California, Berkeley.She married Clifford Phillips, joined the Marine Corps during World War II, had two children and divorced. Gloria later moved to San Francisco, married George A. Brasuel, bore three more children and graduated with honors from San Francisco State University with a major in art and an elementary teaching credential—an exceptional feat with five children. Upon completion of her first year of teaching, Gloria, her husband and family moved to Lone Pine, California, to continue her teaching career and had one more child. She then lived in Hawaii, Guam and Tucson and Winslow, Arizona. Her teaching career spanned 30 years. Gloria traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia.At the age of 72, she walked, solo, the length of Ireland, spent a year in Bantry, Ireland, and then moved to Crescent City, which she loved and called home for 21 years. While in Crescent City, Gloria served on the library board and foundation for ten years and was a member of the local Women’s Club and Red Hat Society, where she thoroughly enjoyed the company of many friends while playing bunco. Gloria also participated in Tai Chi and looked forward to playing Mexican Train on Sundays with beloved friends.She is survived by her six children: Ann Parker of Crescent City; Hope Wilder (Norman) of Crescent City; George Brasuel (Jasmine) of Guam; Paula Davis of Hawaii; Summer Brasuel (Frank) of Somerset, California; Gloria C.
