The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office welcomed new Undersheriff Randy Waltz June 15. Sheriff Erik Apperson administered the oath of office outside of the Flynn Center. “I can’t hardly explain how excited I am to have Randy on board,” Apperson posted on Facebook. “I want to thank HR for their part in recruiting him to our agency and his family for supporting his decision to serve Del Norte. Mostly, I want to thank him for choosing to join our ranks. He brings a lot to the table and I know our communities will be better served because of his leadership.” #placement_573654_0_i{width:100%;max-width:550px;margin:0 auto;}var rnd = window.rnd || Math.floor(Math.random()*10e6);var pid573654 = window.pid573654 || rnd;var plc573654 = window.plc573654 || 0;var abkw = window.abkw || '';var absrc = 'https://ads.empowerlocal.co/adserve/;ID=181918;size=0x0;setID=573654;type=js;sw='+screen.width+';sh='+screen.height+';spr='+window.devicePixelRatio+';kw='+abkw+';pid='+pid573654+';place='+(plc573654++)+';rnd='+rnd+';click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER';var _absrc = absrc.split("type=js"); absrc = _absrc[0] + 'type=js;referrer=' + encodeURIComponent(document.location.href) + _absrc[1];document.write('');During the ceremony, Waltz’s badge was pinned by his wife, Shelly. As undersheriff, Waltz will work directly alongside Apperson and serve as the sheriff in his absence. The former undersheriff, Bill Steven, retired May 22. Waltz grew up in the small mountainous community of Big Creek, located in the Sierra Nevada, just east of Fresno. He attended Fresno City College where he studied engineering. He was ultimately hired by Fresno Public Works. He first served as a reserve police officer for the City of Fresno from 1981 through 1986. Although he continued his career with public works, he never lost the desire to serve as a law enforcement officer. Waltz completed the Fresno Law Enforcement Academy in 1995 through night classes. He was hired as a deputy for Tulare County in 1996. He was quickly promoted to sergeant and his responsibilities included patrol and custody assignments, internal affairs and working on the administrative team. In 2007, Waltz was hired at the Fresno District Attorney’s Office and served as a senior DA investigator until the end of 2019. He was tasked with investigating sexual assaults, consumer protection, major crimes, prison crimes and juvenile crimes as part of the Felony Trial Unit. He also managed training and property/evidence. Waltz has been a member of the California POST Advisory Committee since 2013 and he is an adjunct instructor of POST certified courses at the Fresno Police Academy. According to the DNSO Facebook post, Waltz is looking forward to enhancing public safety professionalism in the county and region through training and staff development. He has already worked with Apperson to bring a two-week long POST Supervisors Course to Del Norte County this summer. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('ad-1515727'); });
