‘Fair food,’ heroes and cruise for the holiday

Check the Crescent City Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page and website for winners and also for a map for the scavenger hunt to find poster of “Hometown Heroes” at locations throughout the county.The “heroes” also are featured on calendars. The 12 heroes, in no particular order, are: Margaret Mathews, George Pettit, Angela Glore, Shelly Pena, Officer Yeng Lo, Kelly Schelllong, Joe Gregorio, Hilary Fahning, Ashley Buckskin, Douglas Plack, Emily Ricks and Denise Harnden.Cruise 101, Crescent City to BrookingsIt’s an unsanctioned, unofficial cruise (as it was over the Memorial Day weekend), but local car groups and individuals are planning another “Cruising 101” event with classic cars, trucks, modifieds, the family car and cycles enjoying the ride together.It’s a way to spread some cheer a we drive by those staying home this holiday. “This cruise isn’t a political statement,” one of the organizers said.” Please no signs or banners to that effect.” But patriotic decorations are encouraged.This time, the cruise will begin in Crescent City, with a “show-n-shine" from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the grass field behind California Auto Image on the corner of California and Washington. Organizers are asking that people bring cash or canned and boxed food donations for the Brookings and Crescent City food banks.At 1 p.m., the cruise will begin, with vehicles following a route around Crescent City, then up 101 and around Smith River and on to (and around) Brookings, ending up where the Memorial Day cruise started at the Church of the Nazarene on North Chetco Avenue (101) in Brookings.A map packet and directions is available online: http://tiny.cc/j2irrzFort DickFort Dick fire personnel will be doing a small parade on the 4th of July for Fort Dick residents. Check their Facebook page on Friday, July 3, for the time and route.BrookingsCurry County Republicans plan a “Let Freedom Ring Rally” from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.“Be a patriot, support our president and our freedoms,” said Dianna Blazo, one of the organizers. Attendees are advised to bring their own chairs. A live band, signs and food truck will be available. The event will be held in the parking lot of Goldilocks Antiques, 548 Chetco Ave., Brookings.
