It might not be as exciting as the summer Olympics, but at least itโ€™s not being canceled or postponed. Participate in the Second Annual Tansy Games to help out the environment and enjoy some time in the outdoors. The Tansy Games are a fun idea from thje Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority to get help removing the invasive tansy ragwort weed. #placement_573654_0_i{width:100%;max-width:550px;margin:0 auto;}var rnd = window.rnd || Math.floor(Math.random()*10e6);var pid573654 = window.pid573654 || rnd;var plc573654 = window.plc573654 || 0;var abkw = window.abkw || '';var absrc = 'https://ads.empowerlocal.co/adserve/;ID=181918;size=0x0;setID=573654;type=js;sw='+screen.width+';sh='+screen.height+';spr='+window.devicePixelRatio+';kw='+abkw+';pid='+pid573654+';place='+(plc573654++)+';rnd='+rnd+';click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER';var _absrc = absrc.split("type=js"); absrc = _absrc[0] + 'type=js;referrer=' + encodeURIComponent(document.location.href) + _absrc[1];document.write('');The games begin July 1 and will run through Sept. 7. Individuals and teams are encouraged to deliver the most tansy by weight during the contest to the a DNSWMA Transfer Station, 1700 State Street in Crescent City. The grand prize will be $500 and all participants will be eligible for additional raffle prizes. Tansy has a cumulatively toxic effect on animals that eat it and is often lethal to livestock, horses and wildlife, such as deer and elk. Eating tansy can cause scarring of the liver leading to liver toxicity and often resulting in a gruesome death. It was also called staggerwort due to the behavior of animals that eat the weed, literally staggering until they collapse. Tansy is the only weed in Del Norte County that has a county ordinance. The Tansy Control Ordinance 77-48 requires landowners to eliminate tansy ragwort within 150 feet of adjacent properties, effectively banning tansy for most landowners. The DNSWMA processed nearly 10,000 pounds of eradicated tansy during last summerโ€™s first Tansy Games. This year, the Tansy Games will be an outdoor, socially-distanced event under COVID-19 virus protection guidelines. Participants are encouraged to wash hands and wear gloves, wear masks or face shields whenever outside, and remain at least six feet apart when talking with or collecting tansy near someone who is not part of your household, even when outdoors. The DNSWMA will pay the cost for the disposal of tansy at the county transfer station, whether one is playing the Tansy Games or not.
