Dr. Mark H. Davis, age 68 of Hiouchi, died on Saturday, April 25th in his home after a months-long battle with cancer. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family and calmed by the quiet presence of the Smith River.Mark was born in Louisville, KY in 1952 and grew up in La Habra, CA. He met his future wife, Karen, while they were both students at La Habra High School. Mark earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and art at San Jose State University, but then decided he wanted to pursue a career in medicine after witnessing his uncle, an OBGYN, deliver a baby. Karen and Mark married in 1973 and moved to North Carolina, where Mark studied medicine at Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.After earning his doctorate of medicine in 1984, Dr. Davis moved with his young family back to southern California, settling in Orange County and doing his residency at U.C. Irvine in Urology. In 1993, Dr. Davis was finally ready to fulfill his long-time dream of starting his own private practice. The Davis family moved to Del Norte County and in 1995, Dr. Davis opened the doors of North Coast Urology on Parkway Drive.From 1993 to 2015, Dr. Davis served as Del Norte County’s urologist. Along with his dedicated staff and wife Karen, a registered nurse, Dr. Davis oversaw the health of hundreds of local patients. Additionally, he helped form the local non-profit “Preserve Our Pool” and was proud to sponsor various local athletic teams and serve as a founding member of the Freshman Mentor Scholarship Program. At a state level, he was on the board of the California Medical Association, where he spent countless hours over many years helping to draft legislation for the benefit of all Californians.Dr. Davis loved travelling and spending time with his two young granddaughters. He also enjoyed taking windy walks on Pebble Beach, spending time at home in Hiouchi, and strolling among the redwoods with his beloved dog, Colby.Dr. Davis is survived by his wife, Karen; children Sarah, Jennifer, and Colin; brother Bob; and granddaughters Sophia and Charlotte.
