There’s only so much to do when stuck in the confines of a home when practicing safe social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.For the Fletcher family, they took their burgeoning band, Weekend Sons, and reached out to friends and neighbors throughout Crescent City to contribute to their first online release, a cover of the Beatle’s “All You Need is Love.”“It’s really tough being stuck at home. And my sons said not to make it too obvious. So, Weekend Sons implies we play on the weekend and sounded like an actual band name,” James Fletcher said.With Sage on bass guitar, brother, Josh, 10, on the drums and tambourine and dad, James, on lead guitar, the video starts in their living room transformed into a recording studio.The video then cuts to all the contributors singing and playing along. The video hasn’t necessarily gone viral, but Fletcher said he was surprised by how many people passed it on, as it nears 5,000 views and sits at 105 shares.Fletcher, a local realtor with a long history as a session musician, said the trio performed a lot together over the Christmas break, learning classic rock cover songs.“We all got stuck at home. It hit us hard, so we recorded ‘All You Need is love,’” he said.The original plan was to just post it to their Facebook page as is, then they decided to take it a step further and reach out to friends. They sent out a recording via Spotify, asked everyone to listen and record themselves singing along, then send it back. Fletcher estimates he got about 25 participants to contribute, including Del Norte High School band director Dan Sedgwick, his brother and an intern contributing a horn section.“I asked him, ‘Hey could you do something special?' I was kind of shocked they sent eight clips to choose from,” Fletcher said.He figures it took about 15 hours to edit together the two-minute video.“I thought it was kind of crazy. I thought we’d get 500 views or so, didn’t expect that much,” Fletcher said.Weekend Sons continues to jam an hour or so daily during the school closures and Fletcher said they’re not done recording.“We’re going to keep truckin’, practicing original songs and covers.
