The Redwood Coast Transit Authority, which serves residents in rural Del Norte County, is among eight California bus systems slated to receive a total of $17.9 million in transit infrastructure grants. U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced on Monday that the Federal Transit Administration will award $423 million in grants nationwide to improve the safety and reliability of America’s bus systems. The funding supports efforts to replace, rehabilitate, and purchase buses and related equipment, as well as projects to purchase, rehabilitate, and construct bus-related facilities. The California projects selected to receive funding include the California Department of Transportation on behalf of Redwood Coast Transit Authority, which will receive $260,000 to purchase new buses that will replace outdated models. The buses provide transit service for residents in rural Del Norte County. Solano County Transit will receive $1.8 million to plan, construct and install electrical charging infrastructure for an all-electric bus fleet that is planned for the future. The project is designed for residents of Solano County, part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The Transit Joint Powers Authority for Merced County “The Bus” will receive $2 million to purchase zero-emission electric buses and charging equipment to replace the agency’s outdated gasoline-fueled buses. Kings County Area Public Transit Agency will receive $3.3 million to purchase new buses for residents in the Central San Joaquin Valley. California Department of Transportation on behalf of Full Access and Coordinated Transportation, Inc., which provides specialized transportation services for residents of San Diego County, will receive $466,883 to purchase accessible vehicles to replace older models. The new vehicles are designed for passengers with disabilities, seniors and others who use the service. California Department of Transportation on behalf of Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System will receive $4.3 million to purchase battery-electric, over-the-road coach buses equipped with ADA lifts and restrooms.
