The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Curtin Maritime, a dredging company from Richmond, California, completed dredging the Crescent City Harbor federal navigation channel Nov. 21.Although some were concerned the dredging could cause risk to nearby Anchor Way by changing wave activity, harbor officials have determined the street remains safe from damage.Dredging is the process of removing silt and sand from the harbor that has slowly built up from the waves pushing it inland. If not removed, the silt could interfere with boats’ ability to safely enter and exit the harbor.#placement_573654_0_i{width:100%;max-width:550px;margin:0 auto;}var rnd = window.rnd || Math.floor(Math.random()*10e6);var pid573654 = window.pid573654 || rnd;var plc573654 = window.plc573654 || 0;var abkw = window.abkw || '';var absrc = 'https://ads.empowerlocal.co/adserve/;ID=181918;size=0x0;setID=573654;type=js;sw='+screen.width+';sh='+screen.height+';spr='+window.devicePixelRatio+';kw='+abkw+';pid='+pid573654+';place='+(plc573654++)+';rnd='+rnd+';click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER';var _absrc = absrc.split("type=js"); absrc = _absrc[0] + 'type=js;referrer=' + encodeURIComponent(document.location.href) + _absrc[1];document.write('');When the Corps of Engineers dredged the federal channel, the agency deposited approximately 53,000 cubic yards into the Whaler Island Groin, causing the groin’s height to reach 5 feet. The increase in the groin’s height worried those who expressed concerns regarding the possible damage this could do to Anchor Way.Wikipedia defines a groin as a rigid hydraulic structure built from an ocean shore that interrupts water flow and limits the movement of sediment.“The public was concerned that when we have the high waters from the king tide or whatever else, that when it came across and broke over (the groin), that it would have a straight shot to go up to Anchor Way and also the parking area, and deposit tree limbs and rocks,” said deputy harbormaster Lane Tavasci.However, following Thanksgiving week’s bomb cyclone weather, harbor officials determined Anchor Way did not face that danger, since waves did not reach Anchor Way nor the adjacent parking area.“Now that we have the majority of the storm hit last night, it did not cross through the inland groin and go up onto Anchor Way, (and) did not place any debris,” Tavasci.High storm waves Nov. 26 did pull some of the sand out of the groin into the ocean, dropping the height to around 3 ½ to 4 feet. The drop will alleviate the issue of the water being strong enough to come over the groin wall and reach Anchor Way, said officials.The corps had been monitoring the groin area, as have harbor officials. “So that’s the important part, it does not look like it will be an issue,” Tavasci said.Aside from worries about the groin, Tavasci said the dredging went well. Officials said they won’t know the depth of the dredged area until they conduct a formal survey and review their records, although the depth is supposed to reach 15 feet.No survey date has yet been set. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('ad-1515727'); });
