Pacific Pantry’s shelves are nearly bare for the holidays, as Crescent City Community Development Block Grant funding ended last month.To ensure that the pantry’s doors remain open to Del Norte County individuals and families for the holidays, the Family Resource Center of the Redwoods and the Del Norte and Tribal Lands Community Food Council are launching a multifaceted fundraising campaign to raise $25,000 by the close of 2019.The Pacific Pantry, at 494 Pacific Ave. in Crescent City, is administered by the food council. Funding had been provided through the block grant when the pantry opened in April 2018. Since then, the pantry has logged 9,167 household visits, translating to about a week of food for each of 23,075 people.#placement_573654_0_i{width:100%;max-width:550px;margin:0 auto;}var rnd = window.rnd || Math.floor(Math.random()*10e6);var pid573654 = window.pid573654 || rnd;var plc573654 = window.plc573654 || 0;var abkw = window.abkw || '';var absrc = 'https://ads.empowerlocal.co/adserve/;ID=181918;size=0x0;setID=573654;type=js;sw='+screen.width+';sh='+screen.height+';spr='+window.devicePixelRatio+';kw='+abkw+';pid='+pid573654+';place='+(plc573654++)+';rnd='+rnd+';click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER';var _absrc = absrc.split("type=js"); absrc = _absrc[0] + 'type=js;referrer=' + encodeURIComponent(document.location.href) + _absrc[1];document.write('');Andrea Lanctot, the food council’s food program coordinator, said Pacific Pantry is the only “choice” pantry in the county … a model that allows patrons to shop for the foods they want, creates a dignified experience, allows for cultural and dietary food choices, and minimizes food waste.Lanctot said Pacific Pantry has promoted the wellbeing of its clients, its community and the environment by sourcing local, fresh and organic food whenever possible, including Rumiano’s cheese and butter, Alexandre Kids eggs and milk, Woodhaven ground beef, Crystal milk, and produce grown in the Taa-‘at-dvn Chee-ne’ Tetlh-tvm’ community food forest and Ocean Air Farms.She said the original grant from the city funded a manager and assistant, with volunteers rounding out the pantry’s staffing. Now, she said, the pantry is run solely by volunteers until a new grant can be secured.The pantry’s sponsoring organizations are asking for the support of the community in keeping the shelves stocked and doors open.Lanctot said the pantry is accepting foodstuffs that include pasta, rice and canned vegetables. They’ll also accept fresh donations, such as apples and squash. Their refrigerator and freezer space have room to store perishable items as well.Lanctot is also asking the community to consider offering a helping hand in one or more of the following ways:● Use Amazon Smile www.smile.amazon.com for both routine and holiday Amazon shopping. Select the Family Resource Center of the Redwoods as the charitable organization, and Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of purchases to support the pantry.● Purchase handpicked, fresh Port Orford cranberries or hand-processed cranberry sauce beginning Nov. 18.● Support the Empty Bowls fundraising dinner Dec 14. Attendees will purchase a handmade ceramic bowl to sample a variety of homemade soups. The pantry’s supporters are soliciting donations of ceramic bowls, homemade soups, raffle items (including services) and volunteers for the fundraiser.● Donate by visiting the Pacific Pantry Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pacpantry, or the websitewww.dnatlfood.com. Or go directly to the Mightycause crowdfunding campaign to make a monetary donation at www.mightycause.com/story/Pacific-Pantry.“It takes about $15 to cover a household visit to the pantry,” Lanctot said. “So, we’re asking community members to donate at least $15.”To learn more, email Lanctot at alanctot@frcredwoods.org, or call 707-464-0955, ext. 2109. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('ad-1515727'); });
