With seven freezers full of pies, nine crockpots of stewing soup, and Christmas decor galore, it’s once again time for Grace Lutheran Church’s annual Christmas bazaar. Crescent City’s branch of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League will host its annual Christmas bazaar, complete with 254 pies, to welcome the community and fundraise this Saturday. “Everybody’s invited. Each year, the league raises funds for local charities and overseas missions. At some point in the 1990s, someone had an idea … make and sell pies. Beginning in the summer when berries were ripe, women from the church gathered to make pies, bag them, freeze them, then sell them. They made 80 pies that year. “We have a good time. It’s good camaraderie,” Munz said. “We just coming together, we spend that time in the summer making the pies and fretting over all of that. We just enjoy getting all together. I think we become closer.” Since then, it has grown aplenty. From July until October of this year, eight women met for pie making - each time producing 30 to 35 - until they totaled 254 pies. Businesses and community members donated nearly all of the fruit, so the church needed only to purchase peaches. Apple, peach rhubarb, blackberry and strawberry rhubarb pies will be for sale for $7 each. “I’ve appreciated the people who have picked the fruit and brought the fruit in. That’s a really big help,” Munz said. “That’s neat, to feel that camaraderie within the community of people who want to share.” Along with the pies, people have donated handcrafted items, seasoned salts, items for a drawing, and jams and jellies to be sold at the bazaar. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('ad-1515727'); });
