Crescent City Girl Scouts Service Unit 133 kicks off its second-annual Help a Hero! program Oct. 21.Through Nov. 8, the Scouts are seeking donations to fill “socks of love” to donate to the area’s homeless veteran population. The Boy Scouts always do a canned food drive. She wanted to do ‘socks of love.’ I wanted to do the canned food drive, too.“So, we combined the two and the name of the event rolled off tongue — Help a Hero,” said Marks, whose daughter, Elizabeth, is one of the eight seventh-graders in Troop 90658.Drop boxes have been set up at Mary Peacock, Joe Hamilton, Bess Maxwell, Redwood and Pine Grove elementary schools, as well as in Veterans Hall at 810 H. St.The list of supplies needed includes:— new socks (men’s and women’s)— wash cloths— granola bars— canned meals— soap— toothbrushes and toothpaste— feminine hygiene products.The supplies will be collected and assembled Nov. 20 at the Veterans Hall.“Last year, we spent about $120 on canned foods and supplies, and received about $600 in food donations and about $300 worth of toiletries. We were actually pretty surprised by the amount we got.
