Lovingly known as “Grandma Sue,” Susan Carter, 96, passed away peacefully in Bozeman, Montana on March 21, 2019.Sue was born in Sayre, Pennsylvania to Michael and Anastasia (Fedchak) Tzupp. She was the fifth born of six children and enjoyed her childhood growing up in a Ukrainian, Italian, and Jewish neighborhood. She was a graduate of Sayre High School and later attended a business school in Binghamton, New York.In the 1940s, Sue followed her sister, Irene, and her family west eventually settling in Crescent City.Sue worked as an administrative secretary and office manager for most of her working career. Once in Del Norte County, Sue worked for Bank of America, Parkside Dairy, Ben Jewell Logging Company and the California Employment Development Department.While working as a secretary at Parkside Dairy she met her future husband, James Carter. During the 1950s, Jim and Sue were members of the 20-30 Club, which was an active social group for young adults in Del Norte County. After they were married, Sue and Jim moved to Smith River, where their only child, Denise, was born in 1958.After retiring, Sue enjoyed traveling with Jim to Canada and throughout most of the United States. She volunteered at the local St. Vincent de Paul store and was an active member of St. Joseph’s Parish and the Smith River Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi.After her husband, Jim, passed away in 1999, Sue moved to Belgrade, Montana to be with Denise and her family. Once settled in Belgrade, Sue enjoyed volunteering for Belgrade’s Meals on Wheels and was an active member of St. John Vianney’s Parish.“Grandma” Sue loved being surrounded by her family and friends. She doted on her two grandchildren, Amanda and Paul, and their friends quickly became “adopted” grandchildren. She enjoyed her evening glass of wine, sitting on her porch, and watching Denise’s chickens on the back lawn.Sue was preceded in death by: her husband, James Carter; her mother and father; her brothers, Daniel and George Tzupp; her sisters, Helena (Tzupp) Strayves, Mamie Tzupp, Irene (Tzupp) Gaskin; and her niece, Susan (Gaskin) Frakes.Surviving relatives include, daughter, Denise (Carter) Riebe and son-in-law Thomas Riebe; grandchildren, Paul and Amanda Riebe; nephews Donald Strayves, Richard Strayves, Charles Carter Anhorn; nieces, Irene (Strayves) Kolberg, Nancy (Strayves) Wymer, Marsha (Gaskin) Carlson, Lynn Carter and Kimberly (Carter) Mueller.A funeral Mass was celebrated on April 12, 2019, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Bozeman, Montana.
