Hundreds of hot rods, rat rods, muscle cars, trucks, Mustangs, Corvettes and motorcycles will dot Beachfront Park and at noon, they’ll wake up. “We’re going to let the town know we’re here,” Crescent City-Del Norte County Executive Director Cindy Vosburg said. “You’ll have 200 to 300 vehicles start at once, revving their engines.” The Rumble at Noon is a new feature of the 34th annual Sea Cruise Outdoor Car Show. Del Norte’s tribute to chrome, rubber and community starts with the Show & Shine and a sanctioned two-way cruise on Friday in Downtown Crescent City. Come Saturday, in addition to being blown away by a wall of sound at midday, people will be able to vote for their favorite ride in roughly 50 classes, Vosburg told Redwood Voice Community News. As of Tuesday, the chamber and the show’s co-sponsor, the Northern Knights Car Club, have received 100 pre-registrations, Vosburg said. People can register their car from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Crescent Land Title at 809 3rd Street in Downtown Crescent City. Registrations will also continue at Beachfront Park from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday. “The morning of the show we pick up a lot of locals, and we’re supposed to have great weather,” Vosburg said. Sea Cruise is one of the largest car shows on the North Coast, according to Vosburg, with the chamber and Northern Knights Car Club awarding 106 trophies. The Northern Knights has long used the show as an opportunity to raise funds for youth scholarships and other programs. Sea Cruise is also one of the last big shoulder season events before winter sets in and things start to slow down, Vosburg said. “It’s really important for the local economy because it brings in hundreds of people from outside of the area,” she said. “It fills up restaurants and motels and lodging. It’s the last big boost.” Each class has a first- and second-place trophy, Vosburg said. There’s also Best of Show and Best Paint. Last year Bayside resident Alan Billinger took both prizes home with his 1940 Mercury convertible. One aspect of the show that often changes from year to year is the number and types of classes. According to Vosburg, the show sponsors analyze each class to see how many entires each has. When the number gets to be about 17 or 18, the organizers will modify the classes based on a vehicle’s year. This year, that modification occurred in the Corvette classes, Vosburg told Redwood Voice. She noted that Corvettes from the early 1960s are starting to be a rare occurrence at Sea Cruise, while about half of the 18 that were in the 1960s class were 1966 and 1967 models. Organizers remedied that dilemma by creating one class for Corvettes that are from 1960 to 1965 and another for those from the late 60s, Vosburg said. “We’re able to analyze that and try to keep it beneficial for people to bring their vehicles out and have a good opportunity to win trophies,” she said. To get a sneak preview at the sweet rides that will be on display, visit the Show & Shine along 3rd Street in Downtown Crescent City from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The Show & Shine will be held in conjunction with the Downtown Divas’ Friday Downtown event that will be centered around Paragon Coffeehouse at 3rd and G streets, which will take place until 7:30 p.m. with vendors, food and music. Crescent City will also open its art gallery featuring Safe Keeping, the Art of Val Polyanin at 240 H Street from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday. The sanctioned cruise in Downtown Crescent City will be held at 6 p.m. Friday. The main car show will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Beachfront Park in Crescent City. In addition to vendors, there will also be a chance to win raffle prizes. Trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m., Vosburg said.
