Service Above Self: City Manager Eric Wier applauded Mary Dorman’s readiness to assist Del Norters with everyday disasters, saying she best exemplifies former fire chief Steve Wakefield’s personal motto of service above self. Dorman, community volunteer leader with the American Red Cross’s Northern California chapter, often acts as a liaison between that organization and the Del Norte Emergency Operations Center, Wier said. “She has given so much to this community,” he said after he listed the other recipients of the city’s Service Above Self award. “I have had the honor, as well as several of us in this room today, of being able to sit with her through the EOC, which is the Emergency Operations Center and watching her help countless families, not only in those times, but in everyday disasters our community faces.” Wakefield began his career with Crescent Fire and Rescue as a volunteer firefighter in 1976 and was the fire chief for about 23 years. He was the driving force in merging the Crescent City Volunteer Fire Department with Crescent Fire and Rescue, “always giving much more than he ever received.” Wakefield retired as fire chief in 2018 after suffering a medical emergency and died on April 26, 2019. “He was the first recipient of this award on Dec. 3, 2018,” Wier said. “In April 2019 he lost his battle and every year since then this Council has given this award for service above self to a deserving community member.” The city’s proclamation mentions Dorman’s aid during community crises including the 2020 Slater Fire, the 2022 Rio Dell Earthquake and the 2023 Six Rivers Complex wildfires. Measure S Project: Public Works Director Dave Yeager thanked Crescent City residents for being cooperative as his crew continues paving a number of city streets. Funded through Measure S, the paving project started Monday and includes stretches C and D streets, 7th and 8th streets. According to Yeager, the work will continue Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Road striping will be conducted as weather permits. “We should be knocked out of that thing really this week,” Yeager said. “It’s going to be transformative. This a big time accomplishment of Measure S.” Next spring, the city’s Measure S Paving Project will continue on portions of 3rd Street, 5th Street and 6th Street. According to a public service announcement, detour routes are available around the construction zones. For more information, click here. ADU regulations: Following a public hearing that garnered no public comments, councilors formally adopted updated regulations to their ordinance governing accessory dwelling units. According to City Attorney Martha Rice, the amendments were necessary to reflect changes in the California government code section addressing ADUs. That code included updated definitions for efficiency unit, junior ADU, livable space and multi-family dwelling and includes new requirements for setbacks, Rice said. Rice said that the California Department of Housing and Community Development had contacted Crescent City and asked when it was going to update its ADU ordinance. The city had been working on those amendments with the Planning Commission and with its contracted planners with SHN, she said.
