An investigation is underway into the death of an inmate who died at the Del Norte County Jail on Thursday. Tyrel Grant, 31, was pronounced deceased by sheriff’s deputy coroners despite receiving medical assistance from corrections staff and medical personnel, according to a Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office post on Facebook. Corrections staff were notified that Grant was having a medical emergency at about 6:30 a.m. Paramedics also responded to the jail to administer medical aid, according to the sheriff’s office. Grant had been in custody at the jail since Nov. 17, DNSO Capt. Kyle Stevens told Redwood Voice Community News. He was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery and a post-release community supervision violation. According to Stevens, post-release community supervision is a felony parole program administered by the county probation department following California jail realignment in 2012. The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office are conducting a joint investigation. Grant’s family has been notified of his death, according to the DNSO’s Facebook post. Stevens said he was unable to provide further detail about the investigation. Sheriff Garrett Scott commended jail staff and first responders for their effort. “Our hearts go out to the family of Tyrel Grant,” he said. “His death will be investigated thoroughly and we will release more information as soon as possible.”
