Moreno, the Harbor District’s financial officer, told commissioners Friday that while staff told her that holding a festival this late in the season would be a heavy lift, she was sure she could pull it together for 5-7 p.m. Dec. 20 — the Saturday before Christmas. “We need a positive thing to happen,” Moreno said, adding that she would work with former commissioner Harry Adams, owner of Stella’s Adventures charter boat tours. “A light show would be great for the community and I’ll make it happen. You say let’s do it and I’ll make something happen.” The Board of Commissioners on Friday approved a $25 utilities credit for vessels that participate in the lighted boat parade in the harbor. Commissioner Annie Nehmer was absent. In response to questions from Vice Chair John Evans, Crescent City Harbormaster Mike Rademaker said previous lighted boat parades included music and games, which led to staff costs to hold the event. However, Moreno said she would “find people to donate to make it happen.” “Why don’t we just have an apple cider and a hot chocolate thing and have a tent and put up some things that are happening at the harbor inside a tent and let people come on over,” she said. “If we don’t charge for it I don’t need a permit ‘cause I’m not selling anything.” Moreno had mentioned the parade as an example of ways the Harbor District could highlight the positive things it’s doing. When Rademaker suggested that the Harbor could get a vendor, Moreno said that if there are vendors a permit is necessary to hold an event and that takes about three weeks to obtain. “I will make it happen,” she repeated. Moreno also told commissioners that she planned to have an item on their meeting agendas focusing on community events. She brought up the possibility of holding a crab feed as well as a chamber mixer. Moreno reserved a date for Feb. 12 with the Crescent City-Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce for the mixer, though said the Board would need to approve that action. Commissioner Rick Shepherd suggested that he and his colleagues approve the Feb. 12 date for the mixer, but wait before deciding whether or not to hold a crab feed. The Harbor Board is expected to bring the item up for discussion again at its meeting on Wednesday.
