Program Description The Youth Media & Journalism Intern Program provides young people with hands-on experience in journalism, storytelling, and digital media. Interns learn how to research, write, interview, and produce media content while developing communication, teamwork, and critical-thinking skills. The program emphasizes ethical journalism, youth voice, community engagement and promotes accurate information across all platforms and all media formats. Intern Responsibilities Participants will: Meet deadlines and follow program guidelines Learn the basics of journalism, including news writing, storytelling, interviewing and media ethics Research topics relevant to the local community Conduct interviews with community members and leaders (with guidance) Write articles, blog posts, or scripts for print, online, or multimedia platforms Assist with photography, audio, video recording and editing Participate in editorial meetings and give constructive feedback Collaborate with other interns on group media projects Learning Goals & Skills Developed Interns will gain: Writing and editing skills Learning AP style of writing Interviewing and research techniques Media literacy and fact-checking skills Confidence in public speaking and communication Teamwork and leadership experience Basic digital media and technology skills An understanding of responsible and ethical journalism Program Requirements Youth ages: 18+ Interest in writing, media, storytelling, or local and news Willingness to learn and try new skills Ability to work respectfully with peers and mentors Commitment to attend scheduled sessions and complete assignments on time No prior journalism experience required Time Commitment Duration: one year intern program based on grant funding Schedule: Both part time and full time available Format: In person, hybrid based on need Hours includes evenings and weekends Supervision & Support Interns will be supported by experienced media educators and mentors who provide training, feedback, and guidance throughout the program. Outcomes By the end of the program, interns will: Create, published or presented media work Build a diverse media portfolio for job applications or future educational opportunities Be better prepared for future academic, media or leadership opportunities
