June 12, 2026 Dear Mrs. Westfall, Thank you for writing to share your concerns regarding election security. I appreciate hearing from you. For years, comprehensive nationwide studies have consistently found no evidence of widespread voter fraud. However, despite the research showing that voter fraud is extraordinarily rare, Republicans have supported baseless allegations to the contrary in order to advance legislation that would suppress the right to vote. The “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility or SAVE America Act” (S.1383), introduced by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), would require Americans to show documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote, which would likely disenfranchise millions of eligible American voters who do not have the specific documents required by the bill readily available, including married women, rural voters, low-income voters, communities of color, young voters, and members of the military who move regularly or are stationed overseas. The bill would also upend many common forms of voter registration that allow all Americans to exercise their right to vote— including mail and online voter registration. On March 26, 2026, I voted against the “SAVE America Act” on the Senate floor; the measure was rejected by a 53 – 47 vote. As Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, I strongly oppose the “SAVE America Act” because it would create serious burdens for all eligible Americans registering to vote. I believe that Congress must instead focus on preserving a federal baseline for voting rights and preventing election subversion. While we may disagree on this issue, I hope you will continue to contact me about issues that are important to you. Once again, thank you for writing.
