February 13, 2018 — The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office (DNSO) has announced the launch of a community program designed to reduce crime. The name of the program is the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program. According to the sheriff's office, it is a "state-of-the-art, crime prevention program designed to reduce crime, drugs and gangs on apartment properties." The DNSO said the program was successfully developed at the Mesa Arizona Police Dept. in 1992 and has spread to nearly 2,000 cities in 48 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, England, Nigeria and Puerto Rico. The program consists of three phases that must be completed under the supervision of the local police department. Property managers can become individually certified after completing training in each phase and the property becomes certified upon successful completion of all three phases. The anticipated benefits are reduced police calls for service, a more stable resident base and reduced exposure to civil liability, DNSO officials said. Deputies said the goal of the program is to "keep illegal activity off rental property." The free class starts on Feb. 28th at 9 am.
