By Donna Westfall – December 21, 2016 – Crescent City, the northernmost city in California bn the Pacific Ocean, will have 9 hours and 9 minutes of sunlight today. The sun will be setting at 4:50 pm. It's the shortest day of the year. YAHOO! Looking forward to longer days, more sunshine and SPRING so we can get planting. Let's thank our lucky stars that we don't live in unpronouneable cities of Alaska like Utqiagvik. They won't see sunlight until January 23, 2017 at 1:10 pm. By the way, in October of this year, by a margin of six votes, residents of Barrow have voted to change the name of their city back to its Inupiaq name: Utqiagvik. Barrow/Utqiagvik is the northernmost city in America, located above the Artic Circle. It was named after Sir John Barrow of the British Admiralty by explorer Frederick William Beechey in 1825. Utqiaġvik, refers to a place for gathering wild roots, derived from the Iñupiat word utqiq, also used for "potato," where over 4,000 residents reside. If you lived down under, in the Southern Hemisphere, you wouldn't see winter solstice until June. What will you be doing tonight, the longest night of the year?
