Among the items discussed at the Del Norte Unified School District Board meeting on Monday: Seamless Summer Food Program: DNUSD’s director of nutrition services, Julie Bjorkstrand, gave trustees a brief rundown of the first two weeks of DNUSD’s Seamless Summer Food program. During the first week of the program the school district fed 800 students, providing them a total of six days worth of meals. During the second week, 1,312 students were fed and as of Monday, 512 have collected meals. Meals are distributed Mondays and Wednesdays with two breakfasts and two lunches being provided per child on Mondays and four breakfast meals and four lunch meals provided per child on Wednesdays. Meals are distributed from 11 a.m.-noon. For a list of sites, visit www.facebook.com/delnortenutrition or call (707) 464-0246. Surplus equipment: A request from Del Norte High School Principal Alison Eckart to surplus four items from the school’s weight room turned into a discussion on whether there should be a policy on how to handle such a sale. According to Eckart, the old equipment needs to be moved out of the weight room to make way for new free weights and aerobic machines. Those items include a pull-up dip-assist machine, a quad extension machine, a jump squat machine and a punch and drive machine. Eckart speculated that they could sell for about $300 to $400 each. Trustee Area 5 representative Michael Greer said that in the past, private sales of surplus equipment weren't advertised and so people had to be “in the know” in order to take advantage of the sale. The Board of Trustees approved Eckart’s request, but Greer said that he and his colleagues should discuss whether there should be a policy on the sale of surplus equipment. “One of the concerns I have is whether it’s at the bus yard or a classroom or the gym, if we do a private sale, people need to know about it,” he said. New Assistant Superintendent of Business: Greg Bowen, DNUSD’s director of fiscal services, will step into the role of assistant superintendent of business, taking over from Jeff Napier who gave his final budget presentation on Monday. Napier will work as principal at Del Norte Community School, according to DNUSD’s Director of Communications Michael Hawkins. “He’s originally a teacher,” Hawkins said of Napier. “He’s taught here in the district for 25 years and I think he worked as an assistant superintendent for the last nine or so.” According to DNUSD Superintendent Jeff Harris, held interviews for Napier’s successor in early June after advertising the position regionally. The interview panel ultimately decided that Bowen, who has worked for DNUSD for about two years, would be a good fit. “If the contract is approved, Greg will take over supervision of nutrition services, maintenance operations, transportation and a variety of other projects and programs,” Harris said. Bowen will receive an annual base salary of $165,655 as well as health and welfare benefits, expense reimbursement and 22 days of vacation, according to the contract trustees approved on Monday.
