The deceased is 44-year-old Patrick George Selvage, Del Norte County Sheriff Garrett Scott told Redwood Voice Community News on Tuesday. A Del Norte County Sheriff’s deputy and two California Highway Patrol officers were dispatched to Anchor Way west of U.S. 101 for a report of a male subject covered in blood at about 10:55 a.m. The incident originated as a medical call involving Crescent City Fire and Del Norte Ambulance, Scott told Redwood Voice on Friday. Medical responders requested help from law enforcement, saying the patient was attacking them with a box cutter. When they arrived on scene, law enforcement ordered the subject to drop the knife, according to a CHP press release Saturday. The subject aggressively approached officers, prompting the deputy to deploy an “electronic control device.” When the subject continued to charge the officers, one of the CHP officers fired his weapon. The subject was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital where he died of his injuries. The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, CHP and the Del Norte County District Attorney’s Office are still conducting a criminal and an internal affairs investigation.
