Disclaimer: KFUG & Redwood Voice are actively working with DiRT & Glitter to provide the 10-week sound design course as part of its program. A press release from DiRT & Glitter: "Local Environmental Arts Non-profit DiRT & Glitter to Provide Free Summer Arts Adventure Program to Native and Del Norte Youth and Community: Program funded by Yurok Tribe’s Klamath Promise Neighborhood Initiative Strengthens Community Health" Local environmental arts non-profit DiRT & Glitter is offering free arts adventure programming for native and local Del Norte youth all summer long, thanks to the support of the Yurok Tribe’s Klamath Promise Neighborhood Initiative (KPN). The organization’s Youth Art and Adventure Program is providing youth and community opportunities to learn new skills, acquire job training, connect with professional arts and adventure experts and experience our local wilderness, all with the aim of strengthening the health of our community. Upcoming offerings for youth up to 24 years-old living in Del Norte County or adjacent tribal lands include outdoor adventure camps led by Redwood Rides, a 10-week sound design course provided by KFUG Community Radio and Redwood Voice, a multi-day permaculture design course, a vertical dance camp and much more. The program has also partnered with the Klamath Boys & Girls Club to provide weekly visual arts and adventure activities to attendees, starting in July. The program is working to also create offerings open to the whole community, including arts and movement classes and the annual outdoor arts adventure experience Breathing Bridges, taking place on the Smith River on August 31. Thanks to funding from the KPN initiative, all events and offerings through the program are being offered free of charge, many of which are providing youth stipends for their involvement. DiRT & Glitter’s founder and Director Lauren Godla says, “I’m incredibly grateful to the Yurok Tribe for supporting this program. Because of this generous support, we are able to offer incredible opportunities to our rural community to connect more deeply to their bodies, creativity, environment and each other.” Meng Lo, Communications Director at the Yurok Tribe’s Health & Human Services Department, echoes the vision for KPN’s impact, saying, “Klamath Promise Neighborhood is committed to uplifting youth and families by supporting programs that empower, inspire and create real opportunities. Whether through cultural connection, hands-on learning, or community collaboration, KPN is helping build a stronger, more equitable future for everyone in our region.” Those interested in getting involved can visit the DiRT & Glitter website at dirtandglitter.org to learn about upcoming events, sign up for the newsletter and more!
