Dale Condon, a long-time Del Norte County resident, was born in San Mateo, California in 1947 and died in May 2025. He was a “water baby” who spent many happy surfer hours on the beach in his youth. Soon after he graduated from U.C. Santa Barbara, Dale and his first wife, the late Jan Smith, set off in a home-made hippie camper, searching for paradise, which they found in Gasquet in 1973. His only child, Joya, was born there and Dale was a very happy and proud father.As a self-employed carpenter, Dale was for many years the “Gasquet handyman” and joined the Gasquet Volunteer Fire Department. He loved being part of the Gasquet community and felt a connection to it even after moving to Crescent City. He loved being in the woods, worked for the Forest Service and later for the California Conservation Corps (CCC), where he passed on his construction skills to young Corpsmembers. He also served as a CCC AmeriCorps coordinator and taught carpentry at Del Norte High School. Dale dedicated his life to service, teaching others how to make things, to build things, to improve their skills and to be proud of their work.For many years he swam at Fred Endert Pool and considered himself one of the “pool people”. He always loved the Smith River, and the river otter was his totem animal. If friends are so inclined, a donation to smithriveralliance.org in Dale’s memory would be fitting and appreciated.Dale is lovingly remembered by his wife of 29 years Beverly, his daughter Joya, his grandchildren Aedan and Erin, his sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews, and stepchildren.A celebration in his memory will be held later in the summer.
