Crescent City Police Chief Richard Griffin beamed with pride as he presented award plaques to recently appointed Sergeant Yeng Lo and acknowledged retiring canine, Lt Kai and his handler Sgt. Anthony Lopez (who is not retiring).Hmong family members and the community watched in pride as Officer Lo was promoted to Sergeant. Kai Canine Lt. Kai came to the CCPD in February 2017 and has honorably served for seven years. Lt. Kai has just turned nine, December 11.Canine Kai has an admirable record in police service. Here are his contributions: • 435 deployments• 507 arrests• Six contact arrests• $80,308 currency seized• Hundreds of grams of Heroin and Cocaine seizure• 1.42 kilos of Methamphetamines• 35 kilos of Marijuana• 293 outlawed pills• 18 hand guns, 17 rifles and shotguns• 1458 various pieces of drug paraphernalia Retired Lt Kai will live as a private canine with the Lopez family.Some years back, the Council created the Service over Self communiy recognition award named in memory of past away Fire Chief Stephen Wakefield. The recognition is presented the first Monday in December to a recipient who personifies Service over Self. The 2024 winner of this prestigious recognition is Michael Young, civil engineer, interim City Manager, Habitat for Humanity volunteer/ advocate and so many more accolades. In other City business, Councilors needed a super majority 4/5 vote to renew the emergency status on the soon-to-be completed Pebble Beach Drive, between 7th and 8th Streets. Councilor Isaiah Wright was absent from the Monday meeting. An under-the- weather Jason Greenough called into the meeting via Zoom to cast the fourth vote to ensure continued Cal Trans and US Highways funding.
