The Crescent City Council has given the green light to enter Agreements with Cal Trans for a Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). With the assistance of PlanWest Partners of Arcata, the City applied for and was awarded a $225,000 HSIP grant, May 15. Per grant requirements the City must contribute $25,000, or ten percent of the $250,000 project. Measure S funds will be utilized for this project.Three years ago, Crescent City developed a Local Road Safety Plan (LRSP) that utilized the best available data related to roadway incidents. The LRSP identified pedestrians as one of six challenge/ emphasis areas. As a result, pedestrian crossing was identified as a systematic countermeasure that could be implemented citywide.In addition to the LRSP, The Del Norte County Safe Routes to School Survey identified Safety of Intersections and Crossings as one of the top reasons why children do not walk or bike to school.
