Memorial Day 2024 was recognized by VFW Post 1381 and some 200 members of the Public. David Cooper, Commander Post 1381 R. Gitlin Post Commander David Cooper welcomed those who came to “… remember and honor the service who gave their lives in our Nation’s great cause. The Red Poppy serves to remind all the dream of ending all war. Bruce Allen Wigley monument Roger Gitlin Chaplain Tim Stahl shared an emotional tribute to Cpl. Jason Dunham who was awarded the Nation’s highest recognition, The Medal of Honor for throwing his helmet and body over an exploding grenade in April, 2004. Cpl. Dunham died eight days later in Bethesda Naval Hospital. His action saved the lives of his 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine platoon.The gripping account of Cpl. Dunham’s ultimate sacrifice humbled the silent audience.The Honorable Judge Robert Cochran sang two songs, Woody Guthrie’s, This Land is Your Land. This Land is My Land and God Bless America. Doug Plack reading the names of 44 who made ultimate sacrifice Roger Gitlin Closing out the ceremony, Doug Plack read the names of 44 Del Norters killed in Action from World War II, Korea, Viet Nam. Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and 911. Del Norte High Music Dept.
