Bernice Everdean Spencer died age 98 on Sept. 3, 2023, in Lecanto, Fla. She had lived in nearby Dunnellon since 1989.Born in Orange Township, MI. to loving parents Lilburn and Hazel (née Henry) Gregory on Mar. 7, 1925, she worked hard as her father’s “right hand man” farming alongside siblings Eloise, Harriet, Gail, and Max. In later years, after her father’s passing, Bernice was blessed with respected stepfather Andrew Tomasini.Following World War II, when she had worked as a real-life “Rosie the Riveter” in Detroit, she emigrated with some of her family to Crescent City, CA, where she married her devoted husband, Glenn Malcolm Spencer. She labored over their home and enormous garden while he worked at PacifiCorp, and together they raised their talented sons Gregory and Harry.Bernice and Glenn loved to play cards and go out dancing, but their greatest shared hobby was undoubtedly golf. Bernice was a top-notch golfer and played in multiple leagues at the Del Norte Golf Course. She was the Women’s Club Champion in 15 of 19 such tournaments held from 1958 to 1977. In early retirement, she and her husband travelled across the country playing golf at various courses for many years. In her settled retirement years in Florida, Bernice continued to delight in cooking and gardening, and read voraciously.Bernice is survived by her son Harry Spencer, of Dunnellon, FL; grandchildren Paige and Shane Spencer, of Baltimore, MD; a daughter-in-law, Maura Conley, of Clarksville, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by, among others: her cherished husband; beloved son Gregory Spencer, of Clarksville, MD; and dearly missed nephew James “Jimmy” Spencer, of Crescent City, CA.Like her son and husband, Bernice donated her body to her local state Anatomical Board for use in medical education and scientific research. We encourage you to explore this noble and low-cost end-of-life choice.A wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother, Bernice’s open mind, peals of delighted laughter, sage practical advice, and warm oatmeal cookies will be missed by many. A woman of her strength and character does not come along often. No services will be held. In Bernice's memory, contact someone you love and let them know it!
