This letter is in support of Valerie Starkey, Supervisor, District 2.During our walks on the beach my husband and I started noticing a lot more graffiti, drug paraphernalia etc. particularly in the Preston Island area. We also noted cars camping overnight and it kept getting worse. We heard gunshots and a lot of trash dumping and fires So we became very concerned about what was going on in our neighborhood. One of our neighbors emailed Valerie. At first, she went down herself to see what was going on. Then she held a meeting inviting residents and law enforcement so they could hear from us what was happening to us. We heard from law enforcement what their limitations and issues are but, both sides were heard. A Neighborhood Watch was started, emails and who to call , what to do information was exchanged. And things started improving. Patrols were increased. The residents were empowered because they knew what to do so frustration diminished and we can communicate and work together. We feel safer in our neighborhood. So the outcome was good and is still ongoing.We found Valerie was interested in what was going on and any actions were taken very quickly and things were accomplished. She is a natural leader. They didn’t drag on for months in some committee.One of the best things about Valerie is the rapport she has with law enforcement. She is good at communicating and getting the work done. We saw a lot of respect both ways. She listens to her constituents and has been getting our neighborhoods safer and better lighted.
