Retired Del Norte High School football coach, athletic director and dean of students, Richard “Dick” Trone passed away peacefully at his daughter’ s Crescent City home on Monday Oct. 23. He was 90.He was raised in Fort Dick and graduated from Del Norte High School in 1951. After serving in the Korean conflict, he attended Humboldt State University, where his prowess in football and baseball are memorialized in the university’s Hall of Fame. Coach Trone spent more than 20 years coaching high school and college teams in Yucca Valley and College of the Desert east of Los Angeles, but always returned home during summer breaks.He came home for good in 1980 to teach and coach at Del Norte High School until his retirement in 1992. After retirement, he continued to substitute in the classroom for several years. He was a fixture at hometown athletic events cheering for his beloved Warriors until age began catching up with him. Between Sept.14,2007 and August 20, 2016, Coach Trone wrote a weekly column for the Del Norte Triplicate sharing memories and re-telling the athletic feats of local community members, past and present, bringing their stories to life for new generations.Throughout his career Trone’s coaching and sportsmanship positively influenced hundreds of young men and women, he loved every minute inspiring his athletes and students to be their very best in the game of life. Richard “Dick” Trone Trone is preceded in death by his parents Shirley and Bernice Trone. He is survived by his wife, Donna, with whom he reconnected with at their 40th class reunion and they had 30 years together. He is also survived by his two daughters Holly Hunt (Gary), Kimberly Trone, stepchildren Shannon Davenport and Clay Morgan; granddaughters Samantha Killen, Nicole Baciuna and Shannon Reeve; his brother Frank Trone, and many nieces and nephews.
