β€œIt’s like we had to start over.” Those were the words of Karen Brohmer, president of Habitat for Humanity, after a several years hiatus on building homes for those in need. β€œMany of our volunteers moved on and our base of members has changed,” Brohmer stated. The long COVID era has passed, and Habitat for Humanity celebrated the groundbreaking of its sixth home, Sunday, May 21.#placement_573654_0_i{width:100%;max-width:550px;margin:0 auto;}var rnd = window.rnd || Math.floor(Math.random()*10e6);var pid573654 = window.pid573654 || rnd;var plc573654 = window.plc573654 || 0;var abkw = window.abkw || '';var absrc = 'https://ads.empowerlocal.co/adserve/;ID=181918;size=0x0;setID=573654;type=js;sw='+screen.width+';sh='+screen.height+';spr='+window.devicePixelRatio+';kw='+abkw+';pid='+pid573654+';place='+(plc573654++)+';rnd='+rnd+';click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER';var _absrc = absrc.split("type=js"); absrc = _absrc[0] + 'type=js;referrer=' + encodeURIComponent(document.location.href) + _absrc[1];document.write('');Present at the ceremony was the Bridget and Diego Wilson family, including their three children, adopted twins and extended family. The Wilsons were selected as the recipient family of the home to be built at 2723 Nickel Avenue in Crescent City. The new construction team consists of civil engineer and former Crescent City Manager Mike Young, contractor/designer Scott Huffman and contractor George Mayer, who will oversee the build. The Wilson family will soon have their own home thanks to Habitat for Humanity. Contributed photo Pastor Pat Henderson delivered the blessing for the proposed four-bedroom home. Construction may take up to 24 months, depending on volunteer involvement. Construction on the Nickel home begins this summer.Habitat for Humanity is committed to giving families a β€œhand up.” The interest-free 30-year loan requires no down payment. Habitat serves as the bank for the mortgage.Habitat seeks volunteers, irrespective of building experience, to assist in the construction and fundraising for future projects. The next two fundraisers are the dinner/auction this Fall and the Garden Tour this summer. The parcel on Nickel Avenue was donated by Dr. Robert Prentice.β€œHome ownership is challenging. It changes lives, brings stability to the community and benefits Del Norte County long term. The completion of this home could not be achieved without the support of the Del Norte community,” said Brohmer.Those interested in helping are encouraged to give Habitat for Humanity a call at 866-800-3127. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('ad-1515727'); });
