Soroptimist Club awards scholarships to local women

Soroptimist International of Crescent City, a global volunteer organization providing women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment, presented a $1,000 Live Your Dream: Education and Training Award for Women to help a local woman improve her economic situation.The award ceremony took place at House of Jambalaya on April 13. Jolene Reynolds is the Live Your Dream award recipient for this year. She will use the cash award to continue her goal to obtain her licensed clinical social worker degree. Jolene is currently working with abused and neglected children, attends college as she can and is the primary support of her family. She is the mother of two children and believes that completing her education will show her children the value of an education.Additionally this year, Soroptimist International of Crescent City also awarded two S500 Live Your Dream Awards to two outstanding women. These awards were presented to Jaclyn Stockham and Ciara Garcia. Jaclyn is currently at College of the Redwoods and is working towards a degree in psychology. Ciara has one child and is working part time and attending school. The Live Your Dream award provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training.Soroptimist International of Crescent City also honored Charleston “Charley” Tygart, a student at Del Norte High School, with the Violet Richardson Award.The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts. Charley is being recognized for her work with Interact Club, Door of Faith Organization, and several other volunteer efforts.Soroptimist International of Crescent City provides a S300 check to the annual awardee.Additionally, Soroptimist International of Crescent City honors a woman who, through their professional or personal efforts, is making extraordinary differences in the lives of women or girls. The awardee’s work has had a significant impact and inspires and encourages other women.
