Some 50 youths and their parents from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints gave a Day of service, Saturday, March 11.The kids aged 11 to 18 picked up litter and cut back ice plants along Howe Drive, the BBQ pits, Battery Point Lighthouse and throughout Beachfront Park in Crescent City. Many of the kids came up from Humboldt County and joined youths from Del Norte County and parents to provide the service to the community.Parents and children spoke of why they participated in this volunteer community project. As the practice of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is not to seek personal recognition for these deeds, the volunteers have been taught by their elders to give back to the community in which they live. Several anonymous children chorused in, β€œWe want to help clean up where we live.” Parents nodded in agreement. City Maintenance staff employee Dustin Lovedahl shared the benefits offered by the volunteers as cost-saving to the city budget. He added β€œIt’s an honor and pleasure to work with these volunteer projects.”Thanks and appreciation to Cal Trans for providing litter pickers and gloves. An estimated one ton of bagged litter and green cuttings from the walkways was removed by the city. Also lending a hand were Church service missionaries who have volunteered on several city projects over the years.
