I just read Kevin Hendrick’s column from 2/24/23 on the Supervisors’ decisions regarding the housing crisis here. Again, Hendrick has done an EXCELLENT job of unpacking the importance of that meeting by bringing clarity on the complexity of this multi-pronged approach to housing here. As a board member of Del Norte Mission Possible (DNMP), I am especially impressed because all of these things can be very confusing as we become informed. The DNMP board members are continually reviewing what other counties in northern California and southern Oregon (and for that matter around the country) are doing with creative methods and providing different models for the different types of homeless persons. We too are learning that a “one-size-fits-all approach” is not effective or realistic. We are becoming more strategic in writing and receiving public and private grants. Thankfully, our supervisors’ are increasingly aware of how we can provide solutions by working together. Negative criticism, complacent attitudes, and scornful statements toward unhoused and unsheltered persons only pull us apart and distract us from our work.
