A carload of canines was out for a day of perfect weather in Crescent City last week. They are the working staff members of Critters4Service.com, a Klamath-based organization that provides task-trained dogs to children with autism, veterans, and others with special needs.Critters4Service.com is a 501c3 not-for-profit corporation managed by Frank Mallatt, the “Critter guy,” who describes himself as “an adult with autism.” His service is provided for little or no cost, thanks to donations and volunteer help, he said. The inspiration for Critters4Service came to Mallatt while he was caring for his mother Mary Mallatt in her final years. The dogs worked miracles for Mary.#placement_573654_0_i{width:100%;max-width:550px;margin:0 auto;}var rnd = window.rnd || Math.floor(Math.random()*10e6);var pid573654 = window.pid573654 || rnd;var plc573654 = window.plc573654 || 0;var abkw = window.abkw || '';var absrc = 'https://ads.empowerlocal.co/adserve/;ID=181918;size=0x0;setID=573654;type=js;sw='+screen.width+';sh='+screen.height+';spr='+window.devicePixelRatio+';kw='+abkw+';pid='+pid573654+';place='+(plc573654++)+';rnd='+rnd+';click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER';var _absrc = absrc.split("type=js"); absrc = _absrc[0] + 'type=js;referrer=' + encodeURIComponent(document.location.href) + _absrc[1];document.write('');Mallatt recalls that, although she had only a “90-second memory,” she loved to dance, and “had enough energy to out-dance a three-band festival, and still want more, but not remember between songs who she came with or how she got there,” he said.Mallatt introduced his mother to a world he created for her “where she could dance, then the dogs would go to her between songs and stay with her till next song, or show her to her care provider (me),” he said.Mary Mallatt passed away last July at age 83.Mallatt decided to share his vision to help others in need of service dogs. He chose to organize as a non-profit “because money should not be a focus when caring for others.” Since then, Mallatt took a leap of faith to open up his services to all persons of any age or special need, including veterans.Mallatt said his dogs can help children and adults “better connect with the world” by helping to teach self-responsibility, gain confidence, and act as a social bridge to others. Those who want to help or need help can reach out to Mallatt at Critters4Service.com.
