Soroptimist International of Crescent City, a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment, presented a $1,000 Live Your Dream: Education and Training Award for Women to help a local woman improve her economic situation.The awards ceremony was held at House of Jambalaya on March 8, International Women’s Day. Michaelle Silva is the Live Your Dream award recipient for this year. She will use the cash award to complete her bachelor’s degree in early childhood rducation, which she plans to complete in June 2022. Silva currently works as an Early Head Start family service worker, attends college and is the primary support of her family. She is a mother of six children and believes that completing her education will show her children the value of an education.The Live Your Dream award provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. Soroptimist International of Crescent City also honored Faith Ford a senior at Del Norte High with the Violet Richardson Award. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts.Ford is being recognized for her work with Sources of Strength, a strength based, comprehensive program that’s main focus is upstream suicide prevention. Their message is to spread “Hope, Help and Strength” throughout schools and communities. This year’s Ruby Award winner is Janice Moorehouse for her efforts to improve the lives of girls in the foster care system.
